Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius)
About: Leopard geckos are a terrestrial species of gecko native to rocky, dry grassland and desert regions of Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Nepal. Leopard Gecko’s have an average lifespan of 15 - 20 years in captivity.
Enclosure: The minimum size enclosure recommended for an adult is 4 x 1.5 x 1.5ft. We encourage our customers to opt for wooden vivariums for this species, as this helps maintain temperatures in our Irish climate. Temperatures should be 31C-24C during the day and 21C-24C during the night. Enclosures should also have a linear UVB light. Lights should be on for a minimum of 11 - 12 hours each day. Enclosures should have a minimum of 3 hides to accommodate the thermogradient along side decor, plants and wood to provide enrichment and shelter.
Diet: Leopard geckos are insectivores. Crickets and Locusts are the best staples for their diet. They can also have a ‘treat’ of wax worms and meal worms. Their food should be supplemented with Calcium and Vitamins.
Leopard Geckos are good reptiles for new reptile keepers as there are many readily available resources and guides for their care. They are typically handleable and gentle in nature. Please note that this does not mean they are an “easy” pet. They will still require proper care, research and preparation.
