Crested Gecko

About: Native to New Caledonia, off the coast of Australia. Their natural habitat is a rainforest. They get their name ‘crested gecko’ due to the crested appearance on their head. They have no eyelids so they must lick their eyes to keep them moisturised. If they feel threatened they will drop their tail and it does not grow back, unlike other species of gecko. Their lifespan is 10-15 years.

Requirements: Crested Geckos are an arboreal species. Their enclosure should be at least 60cm in height, and filled with plenty of branches and foliage for them to hide in during the day. As a tropical species they need an environment of 60%-80% humidity - this is achieved through daily misting. They must be misted at least twice daily as this is how they drink water! They will not drink from a water bowl. Temperatures should range between 22C-27C and no lower than 21C during the night. Enclosures should also have a linear UVB light. Lights should be on for a minimum of 11 - 12 hours each day. A glass terrarium with a mesh roof is best to keep humidity in while also providing ventilation.

Diet: Omnivores. Crested geckos will eat primarily a specalised crested gecko food (Repashy, Pangea, Arcadia etc.), as well as insects. Locusts are the best option for this species as they will climb high for your crestie to hunt! Their diet should be supplemented with Calcium and Vitamins.

Crested Geckos are good reptiles for new reptile keepers as there are many readily available resources and guides for their care. They are typically handleable and gentle in nature, however they do prefer to jump and explore! Some crested geckos are much more independent and will prefer to not be handled. Please note that this does not mean they are an “easy” pet. They will still require proper care, research and preparation.
